Delicious autumn !  My very soul is wedded to it,

and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking

the successive autumns.   George Eliot

A warm hello from all the staff at St. George’s House this autumn. As the nights start to draw in we are aware that summer has been and gone, and that we managed to let it pass without any newsletter. Many apologies, and now we have lots for you to catch up on! So feel free to make a cup of tea, sit back, and hear from some old and some new friends…

Two Massive Thank Yous
It would be fair to say that St. George’s House is in a season of change. We said goodbye to Adam and Rosemary this summer as they head over to the other side of the world, well okay Instow (the other side of the water!) Rosemary is the new curate at St. Peters and Adam hopes to pursue freelance graphic design work and possibly continue with some kayaking instructing seeing as the estuary is just a hop, skip and jump away from their new house. We were pleased to have Anna back at St. George’s for her year 5 residential trip with Instow primary school. Needless to say she felt right at home. The Austin family are very much missed but this is an exciting new venture for them all.

Secondly we say goodbye to Erin this autumn as her maternity leave comes to an end. We want to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to her for her work here at the house spanning the last ten years. Joe has moved into the position of head of outdoor education at Ilfracombe College so he is busy getting the new course off the ground and will no doubt be in his element taking young people out and about in the great outdoors. Sadly for us Erin will not be returning to work here at the centre, but will rather be enjoying her time with Tess who is just about walking and coaching swimming lessons for little ones.

With all these goodbyes to such integral members of the staff team, God is faithful and never leaves us without new individuals coming along, not to ‘boot fill’ but to bless our team with their new qualities and perspective.
We are reminded of the verse from Daniel that speaks of God’s sovereignty in times of change, He knows our needs as a centre and we continue to trust in his provision.
Please pray for us as a team that we remain close to God and make the best of opportunities to encourageindividuals as they pass through the centre.   Esther

Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;

Wisdom and power are his.

He changes times and seasons;

He sets up kings and deposes them.

He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

SGH NEWS  AUTUMN 2011

Delicious Autumn

Introducing...

Shelley Moss

Who started working at the centre at the end of spring. Shelley is married to

Tim who started with us in February and they have both been a real blessing

to our team.

Q. What have you been involved in since moving down here?

I have been working part time at the house since moving down helping with

catering and office work, also I have joined a church Street Pastoring team

bringing the churches together in Braunton. I have loved meeting new people

and getting involved in the communities in Georgeham and Braunton as well.

Q. What is your role within the team?

From next year I will be working at the house more frequently with the office and catering work and will be getting involved in activities as well so I can get involved with the groups that stay at the house and I am really looking forward to being a more full time member of the team.

Q. What is your favourite bible verse?

There are too many to mention really but one that is poignant to me in my life and my relationship with God is Luke 11:28 ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.’

Staff news

Martin and Judith are enjoying the lack of competition at home with daughters Emily and Nicola away. They had a great time celebrating Nicky’s 21st with a trip to Paris and a meal up the Eiffel Tower.

Matt and Lorraine are into the school routine with two out of the three Upward children now. Whilst ‘working out’ at school on the monkey bars, Jonah fell (not so gracefully) and consequently broke his leg. Not bad for a first term at school (hopefully not a sign of things to come!)…. Well he seems to be recovering fast and we pray that he has no long term problems.

Congratulations to Baz and Amy who are proud to announce the arrival of Isla May, who is nearly two month old. Baz and Amy now live on site and are enjoying their work with The Point youth group.

Chris was out for five months of the season with a broken leg but we were delighted to have him back in August. He is getting back to full fitness now and is, as you can imagine, a much happier man.

Tom continues to commute from Ilfracombe and has just completed his level 2 Kayak training. He and Lolly are enjoying watching their daughter Poppy (2) growing up.
Esther has been pushing her climbing and taking a more  active role in the catering.

Over the winter Martin, Matt, Tom and Tim will remain full time. Baz will share his time between the centre and working as a physio and Chris and Esther are taking a few months to catch up with family while working elsewhere.

Gap year worker

Georgie has been our golden ‘Gap year’ girl this season; we said our farewells to her in September as she went off to Leeds University where she will be studying sport science. We are thankful to her for coming down and helping us out this year and all the best to Georgie as she gets to grips with the student life. Of course that means that next year’s Gap girl is open for applications. As the team dynamics stand at the moment, we are looking for a female – and we will see through any disguises! This is an ideal opportunity for
anyone with a Christian faith who thrives on the outdoors and loves to work with kids. Please contact the centre for details if you do know of anyone expressing an interest in doing a gap year.

Staff training

We have recently been away as a team to Sennen in Cornwall. The aim of the week was primarily staff training but we were also able to enjoy a good time of fellowship and an extended period of bible study. Most of us used the few days to climb; a number of the staff are working towards their climbing qualifications and congratulations to Tim Moss who is now ready to be assessed for his SPA. This is great news for the centre. Martin, Matt and Tom took out some sea kayaks and completed a rather hairy journey around Land’s end as part of their on-going personal development.

As well as our physical training for our qualifications, we also consider it tremendously important to be on top of our spiritual ‘training.’ A couple of times a year we are able to invite a guest speaker who will come and run a program of talks to bless, encourage and challenge us. This year at Get Active (our 18+ week) we invited Rev. Andy Dodwell, an ex-member of staff, to run our evening meetings. The talks were excellent and a chance to self-reflect on our individual relationships with God. Our next opportunity to receive some teaching as a staff will be at the joint Christian centres conference hosted here at St. Georges House at the end of November. This is a great way to end the season, praising God together with our friends from other centres.

We want to close with a thanks for all your continued support, sometimes it just seems like a word but believe us when we say it, the work of St. George’s House is enabled by your kind and generous support and it humbles us to see it year in year out. Please keep praying for us.
